FOURTEEN

Ai glanced gloomily outside the carriage window, unable to fully appreciate the sights before her. Her heart was heavy, and she was only comforted by the knowledge that whatever choice she made, she would have been saddened by it. All the beauty she beheld within the Bamish borders was not enough to lift her spirits.

She had ordered a dozen of the Ore soldiers to return with her grandmother and obtained a promise that none of the soldiers will be sent back to her. She requested a person from the palace who did not embark on the trip to reassure her that the woman had truly arrived safely.

At the time, she had given half of her soldiers to alleviate the guilt of not returning with her grandmother. However, on reflection after separating from the elderly woman, she realised that it would be very upsetting to her father, especially since he had wanted her to go with a hundred men at first.

“Do you think I did wrong, Michael?” She had asked her knight, when they stopped to rest.

“There is a thin line between right and wrong, Your Highness. One can only determine what is right or wrong, based on what they truly believe.” Ai had waited in vain for him to explain further, but he did not, and that left her even more disturbed as she pondered on his words.

They arrived at the Bamish palace after three days of travel. She almost forgot all her worries at the sight of the grand structure. The array of flowers, exquisite architecture and the magnificent sculptures that beautified the great building, were better than all she had envisioned.

“I hope our shabby kingdom is to your liking, my dear Ai.” She heard Johin say from behind her and turned to him, she was spared from offering any response as a female voice called out from behind her.

"Brother! You have returned." Ai abruptly turned again to see a strikingly beautiful woman come up towards them. She had a slender but shapely figure that was complimented by her elegant dress. Her fair face bore a most welcoming expression, and her dark hair and blue eyes were undeniable features of her identity. She stopped in her strides as soon as her gaze fell upon Ai and a look of surprise graced her face.

"Ai?" She questioned softly.

"Hana?" Ai questioned and the woman stepped forward and pulled her into a long embrace.

"Isa." She said as she broke the embrace. “That is my real name. Isa. I never had the opportunity to tell it to you."

"Isa." Ai repeated smiling.

"Oh, my dear friend, you have blossomed into the most beautiful flower," Isa said, pulling back to observe her in admiration.

"I must say the same of you Hana... Isa." Ai did not doubt that it would take some time to get familiar with the name.

"Oh, how I missed you and longed for the day we could meet again and do all we did together," Isa said.

"Alas, dear friend, I am afraid we might be too old to play hide and seek now.
